"when have you ever heard of innocent bypassers killed accidently by a knifing between rivaling gangs?"
How about Lou Marsh? He was a social worker in the sixties. He tried to stop a fight between rival gangs and was stabbed to death. I know it's ancient history, but if Lou had possessed a firearm, it might have been enough to stop the fight and keep the bums at bay until the police arrived. (Speculation, I know.)
Recently a wacko burst into a shooting range (YES, A SHOOTING RANGE) in San Leandro, CA, with a gun, grabbed three hostages and threatened to kill them and himself. An employee grabbed a nearby pistol, and drilled the SOB on the spot, killing one nut and saving three lives.
If that guy had burst into a store or community center where no one was armed, and carried out his threat, there would have been at least four corpses.
Res ipse loquitor.
