If you followed my earlier thread on the wreckage of a black Albatros D.V., I am trying to determine whether the pilot was Adolf Techow of Jasta 7, downed over Dixmuide 22 october 1917.

www.Idflieg.de gives a reference for Techow on page 234 of the Spring 1996 edition of Over The Front (“Nr. 3 Herbst 1996”) in an article by Jürgen Ladek and Dieter Gröschel. This is one of the few OTFs that I don't have - can anyone check the reference and get back to me with any other details ?

I'm at a loss to explain the reference!
Page 234 of the 1996 OTF is actually the Autumn issue. The article is on Joseph Mai of Jast 5. Page 234 gives some flight logs of June to August of 1917 and a pic of some Jasta 5 pilots.

My Gallery
Charles -

This from CCI 25/2 page 76, Stephen Lawsons excellent start to the 3-part Josef Jacobs story -

"About 3.00 pm I'd already sent off a Kette of three men to protect the advance of a Division. They were Vzfw. Sowa, Vzfw. Techow and Vsfw Horst.

About 3.50pm I took off with the others also to the front.....About 3000m I noticed some enemy aircraft near Dixmuide which turned out to be SPAD single seaters....

When I got home we learned to our horror that Vzfw. Techow had been shot down. The following happened: Vzfw Sowa had attacked a two seater near Dixmuide with Vzfw Techow and Vzfw Lander. Suddenly six Sopwith two seaters had come from above and had attacked Vzfw Techow whose machine started to disintegrate and then fell. Flak 157 reports that at 3.07 pm an ALbatros machine fell after combat, the two wings fell far inside enemy territory. The machine lies on the enemy side of the artillery salient."

The attendant footnote for this passage adds that DH-4's of 57 Sq. were attacked by three Albatros scouts at 3.45 west of Westroosebeke. They claimed two Albatros - one appearing to burst into flames, the other definately in flames. Still not sure that's a match for your Albatros, but it sounds like Techow could have fallen at Dixmuide.

If you donot have access to this, drop me a note and I'll snail mail a photocopy of the article.

Keep at it,
Mike
