The December 2003 issue of Fly Past magazine has an article about the restoration of a Royal Aircraft Factory RE8 spotter plane. Restorers were curious about its fuel tank, made of an unfamiliar green rubbery substance, apparently an early attempt to make a self-sealing tank.

Scientists at Northampton University identified the substance as gutta-percha, an early form of rubber that was also used in early golf balls called "gutties." The RE8's tank is believed to be the largest piece of gutta-percha still extant.

Fascinating!

I just bought my issue of Fly Past off the newsstand yesterday because it contained two articles on the RE8, but haven't had time to read the mag yet.

Roundel,
Thanks for the heads up on the fuel tank info!

Very Interesting!
