I found this photo in a Polish book titled "ASY Wojny 1914-18" and it's of Stefan Stec in his E.V "001" (identified as s/n 187/18...don't know if this is correct). Notice the wing streaking as well as the center section padding. I checked my handy Windsock Datafile and in every picture where you can see the center section clearly, this padding is there. Replica builders, take note! Obviously the need for this became apparent after someone creased his head getting in or out of the plane.

Thanks Lyle, that's a wonderful photo and one I haven't seen before. I think the number was 183/18.

It is rare to see an E.V with the long cocking handles and round counters on the guns as well, I have only seen the round counters on one of these aircraft in the photo in Datafile #25 page 29 (although it is near impossible to see this feature unless the photo is taken from this angle).

You are correct the cutout has padding and its covering was of imitation leather, brown I think, it is shown in the original wing drawing, note also how you can see the plywood joins on the off side wing but not on the near side, this is because the join is a lap join and the wing is covered from the centre section outward, hence the outer ones step over the inner.

I would love to have a good quality scan of this if you could provide one please?

My Gallery
Hans:
The Albatros Werke did not stain the Alb D.I through D.Va, they were shellacked and varnished. From as much as I found in my studies, Albatros only used stain on the fuselages on the Alb.D.XI and C.XV and possibly the Alb.J.I.

Blue skies,
Dan-San

P.S. Would someone please translate the German word "rutlich" as it applies to the stain "violett rutlich". I cannot find the word in my German dictionaries.

Dan San,

"rutlich" must be wrong, I know of no german word like that and this is my language.

I think it might be "rötlich" from "Rot" = Red.

Rötlich would mean reddish as in "Violett Rötlich", a violet leaning to the red side on the colour wheel.

Thank you very much, I had begun to wonder of the value of my German Dictionaries.

Yet another example of streaked wings,
this from a magazine featuring the E.V.
