Hello All and happy New Year
Ive been following this thread really close since I am building a DVIII. This might be of the wall but was any DVIII ever painted in unit colors ie blue red or other ones. Just a thought

Just a quick follow-up note on this topic.

Noticed on Glenn Torrance's website (www.gtmodels.com) that he has apparently tracked down the manufacturer of these stains, and will be trying them out soon on a 1/4 scale model that his company kits - this should be very interesting.

I've been following this thread since it's my good friend Del Johnson who's model is one of the one's Glenn shows on his website from time to time, as Del gets further along with it and sends him pictures. I also pointed this thread out to Del, and he is very much looking forward to trying the streaked stain method out!

'til later,

Yes there was, and the picture is online.

It's a Fokker Razor from Berthold's Unit. In the picture, the lozenge is clearly overpainted by 2 distinct colors, which I must assume are red & blue.

There's also a photo of a wrecked E.V, really smashed up. Whose crash was that?

I have a photo of a D-VIII from the rear where you can clearly see that the plywood wing is covered with standard lozenge-pattern fabric. The seams are even visible. Would this not be standard practice ? The ply would certainly be better shielded from the elements. Later ply a/c used this technique.Perhaps Tony Fokker invented it?

This is no mystery. The photo is clearly labelled the crash of Ltn. Riedel. R.

Hello Dan-San,

Thank you very much for your offer of the photos I greatly appreciate it, I will contact you through with my address.

Langdon

R Pope,

I have studied many photos but I have never seen anything that suggests what you are saying. There are clear seams on the wings of all E.V and D.VIII aircraft as the plywood was not butt joined nor was it scarf joined, instead it was overlapped in its span wise application (butt joined chord wise), each ply sheet covers three rib bays and they are applied from the centre section outward hence you will notice steps on the far side of a wing but not on the side closest to the camera. I am keen to see the photo you are referring to if you can attach it to this thread please.

Lyle,

From memory I think the Lt Riedel aircraft was E.V 107/18, I have more information including the report into its wing failure unfortunately I have not been able to obtain a good quality copy of this photo which could provide interesting details.

Langdon

Here's a photo that I think shows the camouflage to good effect. I would like to credit Roy Houchin for providing me with this image.

Langdon, Thanks for posting the photo. Interesting to note that the apparent color decarcation line almost exactly matches the pattern Dan-San shows in his 3-view of Wenzel's aircraft. The center section is brown (diagionally left/rear-right/front) flanked by green, with brown outer sections.
This is really great stuff. I'm working on a 1/32 E.V/D.VIII for a contest in late Feb, and would love to see the judges reaction to a wing painted (stained) correctly!

Langdon,

Many thanks for the credit! I must do the same...Greg Van Wyngarden graciously loaned the image to me and was happy to be able to pass it along.

All the best,
Doc
