Hello All,

I have a question while were on the subject of Fokker E.V- D.VIII wings.

Was the plywood veneer covered with fabric? The reason I ask is:

Somewhere in my reference photos I have a photo of a Dutch Fokker E.V with the wing clearly covered in lozenge fabric??????

I don't mean to stir things up but this photo has always made me wonder??

My Gallery
Galloway:
The wings were only covered with 1.5 mm 3 ply birch plywood. There was no fabric over the plywood. That is directly rom the Fokker drawings.

Flying razor:
I believe this Fok.E.V with the snake on the side of the fuselage is Fok.E.V 142/18, w.n. 2742. Vzfw. Karl Scharon Fok. E.V 137/18 was taken by the French after the war had the vertically striped fin off Fok.E.V 142/18.
This indicates the possibility that Fok.E.V 137/18 and Fok.E.V 142/18 were most likely in the same unit. Vzfw. Karl Scharon was a member of
2 Marine Feld Jagdstaffel based at Jabbecke Airfield in Northern Flanders with the German 4.Armee.

[b] Very interesting thread.... I have one query and I may have missed reading an answer already, but the base 'colour' under the streaks - would it have been a 'dressed ply' sort of colour?
Neil,

It is hard to say but I believe that the base colour is the natural plywood.

Yes, I did receive the stains from Koloman this week. I need to say I had nothing to do with tracking down the stains. Koloman successfully did this with the help of Langdon. Thanks to them we have the stains. I will be testing the stains out this weekend and will post a photo. Note the original D8/EV used 1.2 mm plywood to cover the wing and on the 1/4 scale plane we are using .4mm plywood (aircraft grade). I have both plywoods in stock, but the .4 mm is a wee-bit darker; the stains might have a slight difference in hue because of this. Also, Koloman indicated to me that he is not in the stain mail-order business and suggested that I look for a similar product here in the states, which I think is possible. The search begins.

Having taken a closer look at the photo of Stec's machine in "The Fokker D.VIII Profile" it's tantalizing to imagine a color demarcation line on the wing which seems to correspond almost exactly to the one in Dan-San's plan view of the E.V. Perhaps even the "Polish Olive Wing" is someone's extrapolation/imagination?
