Hello all,

I was looking at some photos today of a BENZ motor and on the placard it states;

"Flugmotor für Seeaufklarer Albatros C"

I need a translation on this. I come up with "aircraft motor for sea up clear Albatros C" and that's obviously wrong. Is this for a seaplane or a photo recon?, but the "C" classification?

Thanks!
Best,
Dave W.

Dave,

I'm not German but I'll try to help until the Germans reply.
An 'Aufklärer' is a reconaissance or rather an observation aircraft. The 'See' seems to be for sea indeed. Thus the 'Seeaufklärer' should be a sea recon plane. I don't know how to explain 'C' here.

Hi,
the translation is :
"aircraft motor for sea recon plane Albatros C "
the "C" means, that the plane is a two-seater, it is not an seaplane, that would be typ "W"

Which makes me wonder what modifications were done to make the engine so specific to that one type of aircraft in that one role?

The "C" means that it was an ARMED two seater, not just a two-seater.

Hi all,

Thanks for all of the help on the placard. The motor is on its way to Peter Jackson in New Zealand. Hopefully he'll build an appropriate aircraft around it.

Best,
Dave W.
