Hello all!

I´m looking for the following technical data of the ALBATROS D.IV

Height ?
Ceiling ?
Range/Endurance ?
Engine(s) ?

Concerning the engines I heard that along with the geared version of the Mercedes D.III there might has been another engine used in this aircraft. Who knows about that?

Thank you very much for your help!

Hello mossie!

I had a look at this website but the aircraft on the picture is NOT the D.IV! The picture shows the Albatros Dr.I if I´m not totally wrong.

But thanks for the help!

Hi Volker,

Everything that I have read on the Albatros D.IV was that it was never intended to be a production machine. It was solely manufactured to test the geared 160hp Mercedes D.III engine. Because the thrust-line of the engine was raised due to the gearing of the propeller, the cylinder heads were completely buried in the nose of the aircraft. Vibration was very pronounced (tests were stopped due to possible damage to the airframe). A three and four blade propeller were tried, but with practically the same results. It was thought that it also was engined with the "straight- eight" Mercedes D.IV 220 HP engine, but this is incorrect. This is due to the fact that the Mercedes D.IV engine was too long to fit in the airframe.

Three machines were ordered, but it seems that only one machine was built. If you need a nice three-view let me know. I can email it to you. I have no information on it's flight performance or airframe dimensions. Maybe Dan-San or Greg may be able to help.

regards
