Hello all!

I´m looking for the following technical data of the VICKERS F.B.26 VAMPIRE (a ground attack aircraft).

Ceiling ?
Range/Endurance ?
Armament (especially bombload)?
Production Numbers ?

Was this aircraft ever used in combat and when was it built? Any bits of history are welcome because this aircraft is one of the last pusher aircraft of WW1.

Thank you very much for your help!

Engines: 1 x 200 h.p. Hispano-Suiza
Wingspan: 9.63 m
Length: 7.14 m

Wing Area: 24.90 m2
Empty Weight: 667 kg
Max. Weight: 921 kg

Volker, I have it noted as designed as a fighter - rejected as it was considered outdated. Development as close air support came too late. War ended.

Hello Rod, hello Breguet!

Thank you for your help.

It seems that it was originally designed as a fighter. But in 1917 it became clear that this aircraft would be most probably inferior to the modern German fighter aircraft. Additionally the Allied side had such good fighters like the Spad VII, the Sopwith Triplane and the Camel or the new S.E.5 and the officials decided to test the Vamprie in a new role (without much success).

Hi Rod,

you mentioned a 200 hp Hispano-Suiza engine while your picture is showing a showing rotary engine (my information says that the 200 hp Bentley B.R.2 was installed but on the b/w photo you can clearly see a radiator on the right side of the aircraft). Maybe this is the reason why you mentioned a lenght of 7,14 m while I found a lenght of 6,99 m?

Volker-- I have a pic of the F.B.6 with the Hisso engine. It has an Eeman triple gun mount in a longer nose, thus the greater o'all length. Sorry, no scanner!

Volker-- further digging found that 139 and 141 Home Defense squadrons used one F.B.26 experimentally. The F.B.26a (230hp B.R.2 rotary) was a trench-fighter version that lost out to the Sopwith Salamander.
