Hello,
I found several photographs in colour of No. 1 Squadron AFC and their Bristol Fighters in Palestine, February 1918.
The photos were made by Frank Hurley who made two visits to this squadron.
The first picture shows two Bristol Fighters.

The second one shows Captain Ross Smith (left - 11 victories), his observer and their Bristol Fighter. Ross was wounded in action on two occasions. In 1919 he and his brother Keith made the first flight from England to Australia in a Vickers Vimy. "Hadji"Ross was killed in a flying accident on 14 April 1922.

To complete number 4.
I posted the same photo in the thread of Photo in colour of Farman Factory. I found the first 3 photos later, so I decided to made a new topic with all four.
Lieutenant General Harry Chauvel (3rd from the left) inspecting No. 1 Squadron AFC in Palestine, February 1918.
Greetings,
Jos

Is the photographer the same Frank Hurley who went to Antarctica with Shackleton on the famous Endurance expedition?

There is an article in an old Windsock International that explained (in simple terms) the chemistry involved in Hurley's colour photographs. Real pioneering stuff, and in the heat of Palestine it must have played merry hell with the chemical reactions.
If anyone is interested I can dig out his basic technique of achieving these remarkable photographs.

I don't know about anybody else, but I would be quite interested in knowing how it was done.
