I'm always looking for a good aviation museum or two to visit when I'm on layovers. Some places have obscure one-of-a-kind aircraft or museums (or collections) located nearby. Maybe we could begin a thread which lists the ones we know about. Or maybe its already here and I'm not looking in the right place. The Virginia Aviation Museum http://www.vam.smv.org/ located in Richmond VA, has a nice collection of vintage aircraft, including: 1914 Standard E-1; 1916 SPAD VII; and a 1917 JN4-D.

Boneman,
I have a small book that lists over 800 aircraft museums in the US with aircraft, addresses, times that each is opens, etc.
I picked it up in the CAF Museum in Midland-Odessa, Texas a few years ago.
If you want a copy, write or call the author:
Michael A. Blaugher
124 East Foster Parkway
Fort Wayne, In. 46806-1730
219-744-1020
It has been a big help to me in finding small museums in the past. It was $10 at the CAF.

If you are laid over in Central Florida there are 3 fairly well-known museums within an hour's drive of Orlando International Airport (OIA).

The Valiant Air Command Museum which is almost dead east of OIA and just short of Cape Canaveral, Tom Reilly's Bombertown in Kissimmee (pronounced kih-SIM-ee) which is perhaps 20 miles south and west of Orlando, on the west side of town, and the Fantasy of Flight Museum, which is probably about 30 miles from Orlando, to the west on the interstate, past the attractions.

Each is a little different, and each has a website. None of them is really WWI-oriented, but they all have at least something pertaining to our favorite period. They change out what's on display from time to time so you may want to check them out for what they may have at a particular time, operating hours, directions, etc.

Good hunting!

The San Diego Aerospace museum is quite good for the early years. http://www.aerospacemuseum.org/

Presumably you know of Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome.
