I was wondering how WW1 pilots kept there machine guns from over heating?

They simply used the airstream of the flying aircraft. In my poinion overheating of these machineguns hardly ever occured, because the pilots and gunners mostly fired short bursts to avoid gun jams that occured more often during long bursts.

Please have in mind that the belt fed Spandau had about 500 rounds and the ammunition drums used by the observers mostly had less than 100 rounds.
