SSW.D.I early aircraft.
LuckyDog:
By the Iron Cross form we can date the photo. The white cross field was eliminated and Idflieg ordered the Iron Cross was to be displayed with a 50 mm white border. This order was issued on 29 October 1916. So, this photo was taken before 29 October 1916. The later two color camouflage came after this date, these SSW D.I machines had the Iron Cross with the 50 mm white border.

Greg:
Take another look at the photo, they are not alike, I can see at least 5 different patternon the fuselages.

Greg,
I thought it was interesting how different they all were painted in the picture in my original post.

I noticed that too. They don't all have the same pattern, not even close! I still like the appearance of the prototype in CDL. And the cowl on the prototype is unique... like the EI cowl.

Ssw D.i
Brad:
My favorite is the SSW D.I with the spinner. But that would be in the two color camouflage.

Dan-San,

Dan-San,
I agree, I prefer the D1 with the spinner as well. When did that come about? Would that be the D1a? Or was it that the D1a had an increased wing span?
My 1/4 scale will be with the spinner, so I'll be doing the two color camo (unless something comes up to change that). I really find the three color more intersting, but, it needs to be accurate.
Like Brad, I find the prototype in CDL is very classy looking too. Future plans are for an early model D1 in 1/3 scale with (scale under-cambered airfoil, accuarate outline, etc.), it's going to be a challenge to decide which way to go.

Ssw D.i
Gentlemen;
The SSW D.I machines in photograph are from the first production order issued in November 1916 for 150 machines, D.3503 to D.3635/16 and D.3752 to 3768/16. These machines had the same span and length as the later order for 100 awarded in March 1917, serial numbers, D.1230/17 to 1320/17. Some detail changes were made, one being the tailskid and the spinner.
SSW D.Ia had the span increased fron 7500mm of the D.Ito 8180mm.
I am assuming the first serial number group, D.3503 to D.3635 were in the three color camouflage scheme and the second group and subsequent were in he two color camouflage scheme. This will need further study.
Greg can you add to this?
Blue skies,
Dan-San

I have some items for the Siemens archive that are not on my site. I contacted the Siemens Co. several years ago via the 'net, Alexandra Kinter at the archive was most helpful. Heres one item, the rig diagram, that appears on the fuselage side, just in front of the cockpit. I as have a partial hand written copy of a stress analysis. I have scaned this and have it a series of zip files. Dan San would you be interest in this?
JR.R, I would be interested in what else you fine at the archives, I think that they sent me most of what they had for the D1.

SSW D.I data.
Fltmech:
Thank you for your offer, I would be interested in any data you might have.
The rigging data panel is interesting, in that the aircraft illustrated is the long wing SSW D.Ia.

Dan-San

Fltmech,
Will do so ! Seems I'm in contact with the same Ms. Kinter at Siemens archive, who kindly invited me to pay them a visit, which I confirmed, Munich is only about 800 km or so.
Best from Johan
