Common Tire Sizes?
Hi,
Can somebody summarize the most common tire sizes used on aircraft during WWI and the types of aircraft they were used on?
I'm looking for the most common ones, such as those used on Fokker D.VIIs, Albatros fighters and two-seaters, Sopwith Pups, Nieuport 17s and 28s, etc.
So far for German tires I've seen mention of:
760 x 100
810 x 125
Allied aircraft - Palmer Cord tires:
700 x 75
What were some of the other typical sizes that were widely used?
I tried to add this post to a fairly recent thread about the processes used to make German WWI tires, but that thread has been closed.
Incidentally, I seem to recall seeing an old Palmer Cord tire hanging on the south hangar wall of one of the hangars at Old Rhinebeck a couple of years ago. It was in either the hangar where the Avro 504 was generally kept, or the one adjacent to it. I seem to remember it being chewed up or damaged in some way. I don't know if it was an original, or somebody many years ago decided to paint up a more modern tire to look like a Palmer.
Thanks,
SL DIII

Tyre sizes.
SLDIII:
The SPAD XIIIc1 and Nieuport XVIIIc1 used 650 x 80 tyres. The tire size was predicated on the weight of the aircraft. Fok.D.I through D.VI, Fok.DR.I and and E.V used 710 x 85 tires. Fok.E.I, E.III D.II and Pfalz D.VIII DR.I

This is probably a dopey question but what do the 760 x 100 numbers (the size given for the Pfalz DIII in the datafile) mean. Is 760 at total diameter of 0.76 meters and 100 = 10cm at the hub?

Tire Size?
abufletcher:
tire sizes were expressed in the out tire diameter and the width of the tire.
For example, Palmer 700 x 100. 700mm (28") in outer diameter and 100 mm (4") is the width of the tire. The S.E.5a used the 700 x 100 Palmer Cord tyre.
For example the German 760 x 100 and the 810 x 125 used the same wheel with a diameter 560mm. 760-(2x100)= 560mm and 810-(2x125)=560mm.
The 810 x 125 was commonly used on C Class 2 seater aircraft, DFW C.V, LVG C.V and whole buch of other machines. But in the winter months they were used on the Alb.D.II single seat fighter. Why ? to deal with themuddy airfields.

Thanks
Thanks Dan-San,
I appreciate the info.
Did the Fokker D.VII and Alb. DVa use the 760 x 100?
