Nieuport 28 Question

I've noticed this light band on many of the old Nieuport 28 pictures, and have been puzzled as to what it is. Is it a strip of CDL tape that was added later, after the main colors were already on? ...possibly over an area subject to unusual wear? I want to add it to my N 28 model but I'm not sure what it's supposed to be.

Vertical tape.

Tmoth4:
Forward of the vertical tape is a moulded tulip wood side panel. At the tape is the forward end of the fabric. The join between the the moulded side panel
and the linen fabric is covered with a strip of linen fabric doped over the join.

Thanks! Somehow, I knew you'd have the answer.

I was wondering about this myself. In some pix (such as the example of Rick's N28) the band is very obvious, but on others, it seems to be the same colour (camouflaged) as the rest of the fuselage.

On an aside, did the 94th still have the Liberty posters on their wings after they had installed the second machine guns on their planes? Can't see why they wouldn't have (unless the fabric had peedled off in a dive).

I wonder if that strip of tape was cut through when they removed the forward panel and did maintenence. Then when they were done they would just tape/dope over the joint again. Therefore, some planes would have more than one layer of tape over the joint.

...just a guess on my part.
