Any info on Short 827 Seaplane?

The below pic is of a converted Short 827 seaplane to a land bomber. The photo was taken in the Mid East.
  • Was the 827 just a converted 184?
  • Does anyone have a pic of the undercart?

Ross -

What little I've found indicates it's a different animal entirely from the 184. I found one reference to it being powered by a Sunbeam Nubian of 195 hp - interesting cowling. No help on the undercarraige, but here's a great photo from Rosebud's:

Looks like the old-style loose ailerons, no? Your photo is pretty washed out, but I think I see both hanging straight down.

The alierons may not have had return springs. Which would indicate a very early Short.

The pic you posted Eric has a different cowling than the 184 thats for sure.

According to "Royal Navy aircraft Serials and Unit":

Short 827 number 822 was built at Rochester and was to have been fitted with a 110-hp Sunbeam but was, together with the other 6 on the contract, actually powered by a 150-hp Sunbeam Crusader. It went to Mesopotamia in September 1915 (Royal Flying Corps, Force D) and was erected as a seaplane towards the end of October. It suffered engine failure on 5 November and was towed back by a lighter; subsequently, a land chassis was fitted. 822 crashed on 14 December 1916 and was later deleted.

8223 was erected at Yarmouth during February 1916 and apparently participated in anti-Zeppelin patrols. It was deleted in December 1917.

Short 827

Hi!

Should advise you once to go to www.baha.be (Belgian Aviation History Association) thinks there is very probably via this website photos to find and perhaps such three dimensial (?) plandrawing too...

In fact (see on recent East-German thread!) the Felgians had four such hydroplanes in use loaned or bought from the RNAS ...one at least, I figured out now returned to Calais where it served with Schreck FBA planes in Belgian and French coalition services.

By BAHA into older numbers of CONTACT membership magazine was an article published on that war there...I have myself two postcards depicting the 827 type used there but more photos are available via BAHA I ensure you (Brussels Air Museum)

Hi !

Just found that questioned CONTACT is n° 29 from March 2003
Article is fully in French!
On backpage cover is the plandrawing , but only the side views (both left and right!)

Bonds are no made in China.

The pic is a Pup that I believe flew down under here during the war advertsing War Bonds. I could be wrong about the country though.
