What color were Albatros aircraft?
I have seen Albatros aircraft rendered by Mark Miller as natural, brand new ply wood. This also matches several first hand accounts of the same aircraft where they are described as almost a banana yellow. However, the Albatros that I have seen up close are quite a bit darker in tone, and many modelers seem to go with this option. Seems to me that they must have started life as a light plywod color and then weathered to the darker, orangish wood tone. So my question is what color were they during their service life and how fast did they weather to take on the darker color?

Albatros finishes.

Albatros plywood fuselages had a piano finish. I believe the fuselage and fins were shellacked possibly with a yellow shellac and then varnished to water-proof the plywood. Blue skies, Dan-San |
