Eric- He removed the Vickers. He also replaced the fuel tank. The standard tank was contoured to accept the semi-submerged Vickers installation. Ball replaced the standard tank with one which conformed to the decking shape, gaining a bit more fuel capacity in the process. When Ball's aircraft was restored to the normal armament configuration, the non-standard fuel tank was retained. As a result, the Vickers on Ball's aircraft had to be mounted externally.

Small nitpick - the CC gear was hydrosonic, not hydraulic - a different operating principle.
