Great proof documentation Del ... have the same Windsock file, also the old Profile Publication too, both have wonderful photo's. Shows well the light color grayish rubber tyres.
I have a source for a color medium that will bond to rubber tyres and is very flexible. It can be mixed to any shade of gray color needed. I sold some to Ken Hyde for their Wright Flyer Model-B project to color the tyres.
By the way ....

Del, apparently no one has told you this, so I will...........
When planes are at rest, care was taken to try to prevent the effects of the sun & weather on the aircraft.
Tires were covered to protect them from cracking.
Propelors were wrapped in cloth.
Cowlings & engines were covered as well, as was the top wing.
The germans didn't have the luxury of fancy aerodromes like the allies did in some cases.
.......Of course, it could've just been done to keep the ground crew busy too!

Never tiring of tyres
Tire color should be spun off into a separate thread. Rich subject.

Sorry, Ross - I didn't see your post until after I did the split. Didn't mean to step on your toes.
Regarding the tires - have at it, boys.
But a search of the Archives might save a little time and repetition. This has been well-covered in the past.

Typed in tire on the search engine( with tire in the title and at least 5 responses) The subject has indeed been covered. Answer is roughly: Grey, Pink, Yellow, and a combination of the above. No mention of Black at all.

Grey is correct for the 710 x 85 tyres used on the E.V, if everything is protected on aircraft at rest then why aren't the protection measures in place in the photos deljon has posted? Or are you suggesting that only the tyres are being protected in these photos?
