Hello!

Another (maybe stupid) question:

Air cooled rotary engines and water cooled inline engines were the most commonly used engines during WW1.

But how many aircraft used other engine designs (the liquid cooled radial engine (Sternmotor) used in the Salmson 2 bomber for example)? How many other aircraft had radial engines as mainly used engines?

Can somebody inform me about other, maybe unusual types of engines as well as the aircraft equipped with these engines?

Thanks in advance!

maybe I'm stateing the obvious here:
but you didn't mention the "V" type engines.
Most notably - the Hispani Suissa
or are you considering these as "in-line" types?

And, of course, That counter rotaing Siemens-Halske Sh IIIa, rotary, 160 hp. I alsways thought rather interesting

The usual distinction is between rotary and stationary engines; the latter group would include in-lines, v-types, and radials whether air- or liquid-cooled.

A number of French and Russian types used the Salmson liquid-cooled radial. Then there were the various ABC air-cooled radials intended to power the 1919 generation of British aircraft. And didn't Anzani make air-cooled radials used in a number of French 1914 types?

Then there's the air-cooled v-types built by Renault and the Royal Aircraft Factory. The BE-2 and RE-8 were powered by this class of engine; the Farman brothers (among others, I'm sure) used air-cooled Renaults.

Sorry, my fault!

I was thinking about the Spad engine (V-engine) and the "normal" inline engines while writing the thread.

The air cooled inline engine is interesting indeed. Can you provide me with further informations or pictures?

The word stationary engine would have been the much better choice. Foreign languages, you know ...
