Just curious, what is the proper pronunciation for Aviatik?

Is it Ay-vee- att-ick

or Avia-tick

or something else?

Hello,

My Sister in Law is Bavarian and pronounces it :

"Ay-vee-are-tick"

Not sure whether that is dialect or "absolute"

regards

Darryl

I am franconian ( forced to Bavaria since 1803), but even in our very indivitualistic dialect there is no chance to speak Aviatik in a dialect way.

Aah-vee -aah-tick

Hans is right. No long "A" sound in Aviatik. Ahh-vee-ahh-tik!

...if it was to have the long "A" sound if would have been spelt thus...Äviatik with an umlaut over the "A". That is the only way in German to get the long "A" sound.

Just a detail, Storch:

Äviatik would be pronounced like english "aviation".

To have a long A it should be written with an h: Ahviatik.

Not easy, really.

As my Viennese girlfriend Heidrün once explained to me, "What a pity they pronounce Thalia Strasse: 'Ta-lee-a'; when I was growing up, the actual accent was 'Tah-leeee-ah'."
So I guess you could pronounce it 'Ahh-VEEEEE-ahh-tik'...

Hans,

Vieleicht verstehen wir einander nicht. ???

Auf Englisch (Amerikanisch) wenn mann sagt "long A" daß heißt Ä. "Short A" spricht man so... Ahh.

I said/meant IF Aviatik WAS pronounced with a long A sound it would have an umlaut or perhaps spellt Aeviatik to get that sound. Since it doesn't have either it is proof that it ISN'T pronounced that way. Hopefully I'm making sense.

Ohhh, can't wait until we can embed sound files here. That would clear everything up, nicht wahr?

Doch, doch wir verstehen uns schon!

Let me try this:
Aviatik is pronounced with a short A. Just A. Short. Ultra short!
Just a moment! Or do you mean the middle a?

Aviaaahtick. The middle a is long, the first a is short! The stress is on the second syllable!

Ä is a umlaut. It is not pronounced like A short/long or whatever. Ä is Ä. Like 'ey'. Short 'ey'.

Yours,
Hans

Hans,

Meine meinung ist genau wie Ihre meinung. Ich glaube daß Problem ist was "Lang" bedeutet. Ich sage Langes "A" auf Englisch hört als 'ey' an in Englisch Grammatik bücher. Kurz, entweder es als Ah oder Ahhhh ist immer auf Englisch als kurz bezeichnet.

Aber die Hauptsache ist Aviatik ist genau als wir beide es meinen...Aah-vee -aah-tick.
