French Training Aircraft

What training aircraft would American pilots have flown in the French Air Service and American Air Service. Capt Charles Biddle mentioned a Caudron and a Nieuport and maybe one other trining aircraft. Any idea what models these would have been?

According to photograph captions I have seen, anyway. I do not know to what purpose or at what stage of training, though.

Pictures of Issoudon show a great variety of aircraft.
The French trainers were N80, N81, N82, N83. See:

The training facilities were also supplied with small numbers of front line fighters and recon/bomber aircraft.
As you mention, Caudrons and Nieuports. I've also seen
pics of Sopwith Camels, DH4s, SPADs, etc. at Issoudon.

French initial training was in flightless aircraft; Bleriot and Morane Rouleurs (rollers). They had clipped wings. They allowed the student to master starting the engine, taxiing and long runs across the field. Later they were called pengiuns.
