BADBOY,

Here is a link: http://avia.russian.ee/air/russia/a_sikorsky.html

Sikorsky was Russia's most notable designer of the time. I believe that the S-22 "Ilya Muromets" were the world's first heavy bombers.

The picture of the S-20 appears to be a Sopwith 1˝ Strutter. Does anyone have a picture of a Sikorsky S-20?

Steve

Besides the Sikorskis, there were several types of Anatra, Lebedov, and Grigorovich machines, among others. A lot of Russian production was copies of western machines, but they had a pretty fair number of indigenous designs. Russian Aeroplanes 1914-1918 by Maslov describes them if you are interested.

Here is a picture of Sikorsky S-20 from the book "History of the airplane construction in USSR" by Shavrov.

S-20 was an original construction.

Only 5 planes were built in 1916 - beginning 1917, one of them on floats.

Here is also one of unusual Russian airplanes. This double-tail is VH-4 by V.N. Khioni, chief engineer of Anatra air plant. First flight 30.06.1916.

VH-4 was ordered to serial production (50 planes), but order was not fulfilled because of revolution.

Anatra, Dux, Lebedev, Mosca, Tschetinin, RBVZ(s) - all those airplants produced not only licensed, but also original designs.

Lennart Andersson's Soviet Aircraft and Aviation, 1917-1941 contains a good bit on World War One Russian aircraft, as well as coverage of Russo-German cooperation in military and civil aviation in the 1920s. Much that was unknown in the West (at least unknown to me) regarding Imperial and Soviet aviation is covered in this most worthwhile book. Ransom

A fine book on Russian aeroplanes on WW1 is Russian aeroplanes 1914 - 1918 by Mikhail Maslov published by Icarus Aviation Publications. It is a marvellous book covering all known Russian planes during the period. The pictures are exceptionally fine and a mighty difference from the Russian work by Shavrov. These are really sharp pictures from the early Russian period and not the Sovjet retouched versions.

Book can be ordered at Icarus http://www.icarusbooks.com/russaero.htm
