Hello Hauptmann,
The picture was definitely taken after the liberation of the Houthulst Forrest in september 1918.
The text on the plane is 'Allenstein', this was a place in Eastern Prussia.
There is a PuW type bomb lying next to the plane.
I showed this photo once to an expert, and he thought It could be a twin engined bomber,(he remarked parts of an engine under the nearest wing) although no precise type could be given.
Regards,
Cnock (same from the Dutch Forum)

If there's a chance it was a twin engined bomber :
There is one Bogohl 3 crew missing over Houthulst Wood on the 14th October 1918 :
+ Lt.d.R. Burckhardt Ferdinand, pilot of Bosta 16 is KIA at Houthulst wood (D)
+ Lt.d.R. Pfort Karl CO of Bosta 16 - observer was KIA at Houthulst wood (D)
Nothing on the plane however...

What's more, I just came to think about it, this bomber story may make sense, Allenstein was used in April 1915 by the Brieftauben Abteilung Oostende, the later Kagohl/Bogohl I. So there may be a link for the crew there also, or with an other old unit such as FFA15...

What is it??
hauptmann:
First of all welcome to the Forum. The photograph was taken after 4 June 1918, the cross form was changed to the 1:1 Latin cross. The fuselage is plywood covered. The construction of the wing ribs is the same as the Gotha G.V. In the debris is a two wheel landing gear as seen on the Gotha G.Vb. I think it is a Go.G.Vb. Bogohl III was the primary user of the Gotha Bombers. If this is Houthulst Forest, it would be then in the German 4.Armee. The only Bogohl in the German 4. Armee would have been Bogohl III.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

CGAS has Burckhart and Pfort in FA 14. It also has Gefr Heinrich Henstart, no unit mentioned killed in the same place. Couls he have been the third crewmanof the plane? According to notes of mine Burkhart is mentioned in the book "War Flying over Macedonia"
