This machine was what their Italian crew said 'siamo perduti' (S.P.) translated ' we are lost'. It was not very popular.

Savoia-Pomilio S.P.3

Hmmmmm.....What do we do with ex-aces? Especially when they answer so quickly! They might discourage new comers. How about a 48hr handicap? What do people think?

I won't object if Varese takes the lead again, but in this case he did not quite hit the target. Still time for someone else to get it, if by chance he is asleep.

The fins and rudders are wrong for the SP-3.

There's only four to choose from and it sure ain't the -4, so I've got a 50/50 shot. . . . . .

I'll go with Savoia-Pomilio SP-2.

If that's wrong then it's a gimme for the next guy

This photo is an SP-3; note the rounded balances on the rudders.

I believe eroberte is german for "defeated."

Hello:

Following on the theme, the aircraft appears to be an S.I.A. SP 3. S.I.A. (Italian Aviation Company) was formed in June 1916, it being essentially the aviation division of Fiat.

Savoia and Pomillio were the design team, rather than the manufacturer.

The SP 3 is also sometimes known as the ‘lightened SP” or the “type 6B”.

I think you are right, I will not participate in this challenge . By the way I see the answer was not correct.

A lot of controversy for a not so unusual machine. My post was identified by its source as an SP2, and compared to a picture of an SP3 taken from nearly the same angle in the Harleyford publication, the more rounded nose on the latter is clear. A revised nacelle was one of the differences between the two machines. That would make the picture shown by Breguet an SP2 also. I don't know about the rudders, but their appearance could depend on the angle at which they were set if they were not centered. The point goes to Eric. I hope to update the scoring and post another later today; no time now.
