And more...

We all know that Dunning was the first pilot to successfully land on a carrier deck, when he landed Pup N6453 on the deck of the Furious on 2 August 1917 (with a lot of help from his friends, a deck party of the other pilots who seized parts of the machine manually and helped bring it down). On 7 August Dunning landed a second time on the Furious, but his Pup (N6453) was blown backwards by strong winds and the elevators were damaged when they struck the coaming of the below deck hangar hatch.Dunning then took up N6452 and on his attempt to land, he touched down too far forward and waved off the "handling party" and tried to take off again. However, the engine choked and the Pup stalled and plunged over the starboard side of the ship. The impact apparently stunned Dunning, and he drowned. The photo shows the wreckage after it was pulled from the sea, and you can see that N6452 had no flotation bags fitted under the wings.

This is one of a series of remarkable photos detailing the whole story.

Greg

There are more photos of this incident in Major W. G. Moore's excellent autobiography 'Early Bird'.
