I think it might be a plane of some sort, but I can't be sure.

It appears that there are at least two U.S. sailors in the picture, so the plane was probably American. Beyond that I haven't got a clue.

Biplane, squarish, slightly raked wing tips, ailerons on top plane only, no national insignia except colored panels on wing tips (Italian? - Austrian should have two panels), clear doped wings -- suggestive of early machine. What appears to be the remains of the fuselage looks peculiarly undamaged - monocoque construction? No idea what it is.

Actually your guys are doing quite well. Make a list of what you have so far and you be suprised how intelligent a guess you can make.

If the debris in front of the "fuselage" is part of the rudder, and if Ransom is on the right track for flyingboat, I would guess Macchi M type - maybe 7. but not everything is consistent.

On the other hand, if the sailors are American, an American operated M8 had a fatal crash.in Italy - but probably would have had US insignia.

No, it didn't have US insignia and yes it is the M8. Well done!
