Albatros DIII upper wing colors
Hi,
My son, who until now have built WW2 aircraft models, have to my joy (and envy) bought Roden's Albatros DIII in 1/32. Naturally he's not quite satisfied with the marking options and asked me when the Germans shifted from three-color upper wing camouflage of green/light green/brown to the later mauve/green camouflage. To my embarrasment I couldn't answer! I have no specific references on that.
Does any of you know that? Was it at the same time as the position of the wing radiator was changed from center to off-center?

Kofoed,
Dan-San Abbott is the man for you!
Where are you in Denmark? I used to for a Danish company in Frederikssund and I'd stay in Hillerup or Gentoffe. I loved the time I spent there, especially now with the weather getting nice, the area around the pedestrian shopping area in the city center is very nice.
Phil

Hello Der Grüne Flieger,
Thanks for your reply. I get a hold in Dan-San Abbott.
I used to live north of Copenhagen near Hellerup, but for the latest ten years or so (and the rest of my life, I guess) I have lived on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. Just south of Sweden.
What did you do in Denmark?

Kofoed,
I think I've been to Bornholm! I used to work for a Danish gentleman who sold plastic processing equipment all over the world. His main plant was in Frederikssund and I was his Sales Manager for the US. I would jump at the chance to have meetings in Denmark, but I tried to do them in the summer not winter.
I think he had a small aluminum foundry on Bornholm. I went to visit to see their process, but it was so long ago I can't remember exactly where it was. What I do remember is that every where you turn there was history. It was not like the US where we think about a couple hundred years, in Denmark you could consider a couple of thousand!
All the best!
Phil

Hey FokkerJ
Hey FokkerJ what am I chopped liver? I was interviewed by the History Channel on their history of the 7th Cavalry program a few years back. I am a spokesman for the US Cavalry Association. I think I gave the Native Americans a fair shake.
BTW Kofoed, what was Dan's answer regarding the Abatros' upper wing colors? Thanks. Roadhog "Memento mori."

Alb.D.III wing colors.
Kofoed:
The colors are: dark olive green, light green,( 1 part brunswick green and 2-3 parts white.) and rust brown, (venetian red, indian red). There are specific patterns. What is the serial number or pilot of the Alb.D.III?
Also, no Albatros built Alb.D.III was camouflaged lilac, mauve or violet.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Thank You Dan the Man!
Thanks Dan, You killed two birds with one stone with that information. I am working on a WWI novel and the Germans fly D-IIIs and later D-Vas. During the final retreat as the end is imminent, their mechanics discover three Siemans D-IVs on a railcar in a railway sideyard and assemble them. Three of the book's main characters decide to take one last swipe at the English before the final bell.
Seriously sir, thanks for the help. VR, Maj. Scott Price, USAR, a.k.a. Roadhog

Thans for your reply, Dan San. Also for the colour descriptions.
Well, he's having a hard time to decide the scheme. Originally he went for Loerzer's black and white DIII scheme, and was puzzled by Roden's two-color upper wing camouflage (olive green/red brown). Shouldn't it be the three-color scheme?
After having read the discussion about Bertrabs black DIII, and your very thorough investigations, he has become fond of this scheme as well. Here he's puzzled as well, because on the Roden drawing the wing radiator is off-set whereas on Eduard's drawings it's centered. Did Bertrab have two DIII's or is one of these companies wrong?
Once again, thanks a lot Dan San, also for the article about camouflage and markings of the DII. It really makes it a lot easier to make a correct scheme.
