Looks like an AW FK8, but there seems to be a wing that doesn't belong to it from a larger machine. Did it collide with a Farman or a Blackburn Kangaroo?

Shouldn't the thread title be Breguet's Crashfile #64 ?

Cheers
Rod

My Gallery
Circumstances

The photo originated in the album of Lt. Barry Truscott of Camden, New Jersey. Truscott was briefly with 56 Squadron and then just as briefly with 49 Squadron before being invalided back to England.

This particular mess was created by Lt. Robin Rowat, a native Scot who enlisted in Canada and and Lt. William Sutton Smeeth, seconded to the RFC from the Royal Irish Rifles. Smeeth was Truscott's flight instructor briefly. It occurred at #53 TDS, Narborough in 17 July 1917 when Smeeth (in the AVRO whose wing you can still see) and Rowatt in the Ack 8 collided.

Smeeth was killed in the wreck. Rowat was killed on 16 September 1917 while with 8 Squadron flying an FK-8 B'326. His observer AM II H.G. Muscott died the following day.

In Truscott's papers was a letter from Rowat's mother. Apparently Barry had written to her when he found out about the accident. A slightly edited version of her reply follows.

16 December 1917

Dear Lt. Truscott

I was glad to hear from you for my Robin spoke so much of you in all his letters that I feel I almost know you.

My boy finished his life down here just as every soldier would wish to do. For I always feel that every time you fly you willingly offer up your life. Thank God he did not suffer at all but was instantaneously killed.

Lieut. Hart and Pinnock are both gone too – surely Heaven has become the home of many of our bravest boys. I don’t look at my boy as really dead – he is just gone on before. He is really living now while us poor mortals down here are really dying. He was so dear and good a son to me that I miss him unmercifully. …. everyone who knew him knew how ready he was for the Roll Call.

Very many thanks for your kind thoughts.
Yours most truly,
Dorothy L. Rowat.
