That's funny...
...but to be fair (and I know YOU already know this...) some of these asre just from the albums, not actual hands-on-crashed-by-joisey-boyz themselves photos....
Just looking out for my guys....

I knew that, Mike
Hi Mike,
Yeah, I knew that. I was just kidding. Sorry if I offended!
It was for lack of knowing how to identify this very interesting airplane.
Greg

A Salmson 2 A2.
1. The people standing next to it give you an idea of scale -- it's not a scout, it's a big plane, undoubtably a two-seater.
2. The most obvious feature are the pairs of bumps on the cowling. There were very few WWI aircraft with this feature & whenever I see it, Salmson comes to mind immediately. The position of the bumps, the indication of louvers between the bumps and the position of the bumps-and-louvers relative to the front edge of the cowling all match a Salmson 2 A2.
3. The single MG and it's position matches the Salmson.
4. The bowed paneling behind the cowl ring matches either the louvered panel or the panel immediately aft of it on a Salmson 2 A2.
5. Not sure what's under them, but the pair of darker-colored rectangular patches at the leading edge of the upper wing also appear in other pictures of a Salmson 2 A2.
6. Wing cutout matches a 2 A2.
7. Complexity of the landing gear struts matches the tri-strut arrangement found on a Salmson 2 A2. The struts lying flat against the ground even looks like the three-strut configuration flattened out.
8. Two-bay wings with thick rigging matches the Salmson.
9. The tailplane profile and support rigging matches the Salmson 2 A2.

I knew that
Knew you were kidding Greg - I think this marks 30 years I've know you so if I have not sorted that much out this far, I'm in serious trouble....

And now the context
Since the correct answer is already in this thread, here's the context ...
This shot from the album of Cliffside, New Jersey native Henry H. Nutt, original member of the 99th Aero Squadron and later Co of the 155th Aero. Also, the elder brother of Lt. Alan Nutt, 94th Aero Squadron killed in action 26 Sept 1918. As an aside see Greg's excellent JG II Osprey book - it has a nice cover painting of Buchner about to jump on poor old Nutt and Alden Sherry *and* a tremendous photo of Nutts crashed SPAD only recently discovered.
But back to the photo - This is the crash on 1 September 1918 of Lt. SId Marine, 99th Aero Squadron. His observer was Henry T. Odom. Marine sat out the remainder of war recovering since he was on the front end of this "lawn dart" while Odom recovered quickly enough to be posted in mid October to the newly formed 278th Aero Squadron.
