DFW Mars-Doppeldecker (if the Spanyards did not steal a design again-grins)

notwendig = necessary

Close enough -- what took you so long?
Welcome to the scoreboard rammjaeger.

They don't make them like this anymore.
Dove tail, 12.8 m wingspan, powered by a 200 h.p. Benz. She's a beauty.

The DFW. Mars Pfeil Doppeldecker, first built in 1912, was an original design.
The name DFW Mars was applied to two biplanes and a monoplane.

The manufacturing process permitted flexibility to produce either the monoplane or biplane versions,
both having the same undercarriage, tail and fuselage.

The DFW Mars was the first German aeroplane to go to war--used in 1912 and 1913 during the Balkan wars.

In 1912, a DFW Mars was assembled at Brooklands and in 1914 one was purchased by the RNAS and given the number 154. It was stationed at Eastchurch, but when the war broke out it was moved north to Immingham since it was thought a bad idea to have a German machine operating in southern England at that time.

BTW the machine on the first photograph does not look like the Pfeil-(arrow)-Version but that´s maybe a result of the angle of view.
As well this airplane had different engines with ca. 100 PS. some a bit more, some a bit less - I have never heard of 200 hp for this ugly monstrum.

Noteworthy: At least one, maybe 2 were delivered to and used by the Ottoman Empire in the Balkan-war in 1913.

PS: I am not an airplane expert - have simply not enough reference photographs and not the money to pay all the moon prices for the them on the markets and auctions.

Good point. The shadow looks swept back but the upper wing doesn't have the point I would expect to see. I obviously chose that particular photo to hide as many features of this a/c as possible.
A lot like trying to hide an elephant.

If the engine output is exaggerated it wouldn't surprise me--the only source I found for specs came from the Turkish Air Force website, as does this photo of the Ottoman DFW Mars.

Challenge # 222 coming right up.

The Turks admire the lonely DFW Mars biplane! Not only is there a Turkish plastic model here.

There is also a beauty of a colour drawing of the DFW Mars, showing great detail of this exquisite machine. It shows clearly there was no in flight communication possible between the pilot (way in the back) and the observer, right in the front and between the wings.

You can find the drawing here.

Kees,

there was surely no or no easy oral in-flight communication possible but Mario Scherff himself reported the following funny communication for a big long-range mission in 1913:

"Kaum aber waren wir in die Nähe der feindlichen Stellungen gekommen, so setzte die Beschießung unseres Flugzeugs durch die bulgarischen
Batterien ein. Doch merkte ich nichts davon, bis mich Kemal Bey erregt anstieß und schrie: "Höcher, höcher, Bülgar macht sich bümm bümm!" und
demonstrierte dies mit der Reitpeitsche, welche er an die Schulter legte."

"Scarcely we had arrived near the enemy positions when the shooting of the Bulgarian batteries started against our airplane. I did not realise that until Kemal Bey did push me excited [with the whip?] and shouted: "Higher, higher, the Bulgarians make bumm bumm!" and demonstrated this with his riding whip which he did lay on his shoulder."

In fact Scherff may not have understood Kemal Beys words but it reads very funny in German language.

BTW super link with the drawing!

Thanks Rammjaeger for the lead to Mario Scherff and the original quatation from him in german. I searched out that Mario Scherff wrote down his recollections on his Ottoman time in 'Auf Kriegspfaden im Lande des Halbmonds. I have been searching for this book but have only found a reference that the story was published in; Die Flieger, Jahrbuch des Bundes Deutscher Flugzeugführer, 1913.

Have you ever seen a copy of this?
