Tom,

Fokker F.I/Dr.I Triplanes seem NOT to have had Spandau ammo round counters (let me know if you ever find any in photos!), while they often later appeared with the Fokker D.VII and D.VIII machines.

Regards, Gary Sewall

Tom, Gary- I do not seem to have any photos of Triplanes with round counters, but will keep looking. Lots of shots of fuel guage housings, though.

Hi all,

I will try to get photos of the rond clock type counter posted where I will show the internals etc. and how it is actuated.

My two bits...I've looked hard and never seen a wartime service Dr.I with a rounds counter or the high "banana" shaped cocking handle. I have seen the low "cockpit pull" style handles, (I posted images of on the other thread that was cited), on Dr.I's. MvR's guns on 425/17 had the low "cockpit pull" style handles.

I've seen reproduction and movie Dr.I's incorrectly with high handles and rounds counters.

Best wishes,
Dave

Mates,

I gather that what you are telling me is that there were not any kind of round counter on the F.I or Dr. I series. - This comes a quite a bit of a shock.

- Wouldn't that be kind of like sticking your finger into the wind to see which way/directon the bullets are coming towards you.

I seriously doubt that the pilot counted, every time he pushed the fire control button and guestimated as to how many rounds this gun fired as, opposed to the other guns round count as well. It might be a bit confusing in the middle of a dogfight to suddenly found out that you had forgotten some ago and It would be a cold day in Hayedes to hear the sound of the last round go off and then find out that you had missed a couple and you are a cooked goose.

Those boys definately had more hair on their A-- than even I suspected, if that was the case. I bow even deeper in reverence to their fighting skills than I already do. - unbelievable

Thanks for the info gents, and I will myself keep an eye open for something that looks like a counter. I have searched myself on the photo's of the F.I and Dr. I and never saw any resembalance to the previous photos from this thread.

- Another mystery unfolds, I gather.

cul

What About Albatros D Series Scouts?

Dear gang, What about the Albatros D-III through D-Va scouts? Did they have any type of ammo counters on their machine guns? Thanks for your expert assistance. VR, Scott Price, a.k.a. Roadhog

Roadhog,
Dont know but apparently not as I have not seen one attached to any of the photo that I have come accross.

My question is; How did they keep count as to how much ammo they had expended?
