Speaking From Memory...

As I recall sir, the very first guy to sport a red color scheme on his aircraft was a Frenchman flying in the Verdun area. Sorry, without my reference books that's the best I can do right now. VR, Scott Price

Fokker D-VII, unknown serial number, flown by Ltn zu See Gotthard Sachsenberg of MFJ 1.

Black and yellow checkerboard fuselage (applied at 45 degrees), yellow upper wing, yellow horizontal stabilizer and elevators, single black stripe on elevators (MFJ 1 marking). The remainder of the wing surfaces were covered in the usual manner with four colour lozenge.

French Red Flyer

Dear Willi, The Frenchman who flew the red Nieuport bebe during the Verdun campaign in 1916 was Jean Navarre. His plane sported a red fuselage with tannish wings and tail fins. There is a decent water color painting of this plane on page 65 in Joseph A. Phelan's Aeroplanes and Flyers of the First World War. This book was published by Grosset & Dunlap Publishers in New York back in 1973. Scott
