Engine start up

Greetings!

I just need a little clarification on a point about engine start up for Pfalz and Albatros aircraft. Was the prop swung? Or, was there a starting mechanism?

I know this is probably a rather basic question. But, I don't recall seeing any shots of ground crew starting up a German inline engine.

Thanks!

Tom

Hi Tom,

normally the inline engine was started by a device named Anlassmagnet, made by Bosch, Type "ZH 6". The ignition switch had to be in position "Anlass". Some turns on the crank handle generated an ignition spark on one of the 6 cylinders and the engine start to work if there are a fuel-air mixture inside and the piston was near the top dead center. The other cylinders follows until the engine was running on all six cylinders. this was only for inital aid until the magnetos are working driven by the engine.
