Ok, thank you folks. I have another question that has just hit me: what color was the cross fields/crosses on the top wing and I assume there was a cross field/cross on the underside of the bottom wing-I have not been able to find these yet. Thanks again for the insight!!

Mitch- The top wing cross fields would have been most likely painted out with solid olive paint. The bottom cross fields were most likely unmodified from their original clear-doped linen finish. The wing bottoms were finished in blue colored dope and then covered with light blue paint, but the cross fields were left unpainted and covered only with clear dope. None of the Dr.I samples Alan Toelle has analyzed had any clear varnish on the bottom (or top), so the CDL was pretty close to fabric color.

Hi Taz:

I have looked at some of the photos from J6 and it looks that an majority of them are the standard white rudders.

119/17-Unknown
403/17-Black with white trim (my opinion)
472/17-White
525/17-Green
556/17-White
557/17-Unknown
568/17-Unknown
586/17-White
595/17 White

I will agree that the time of these photos could be at different times there for the colors might not match yet.

Do we have a photo of the flight-line of J6 showing all the same color rudders?

I'm not sure if the green was used on any other Triplane then just 525/17. From my post #7 I just don't see the green like we do in the 525/17 photo.
Both of the photos of 403/17 look black to me, the hue or gray scale looks the same as the black on the cross and the black in his personal markings on the fuselage.

Yes, I too would like to hear from Greg to see what he thinks.
