Interesting Alb. D.III radiators

Folks!

Interesting radiator device on the top wing of these early production (?) Albatros D.III scouts. According to the source, the photo's been taken in Gaza, Palestine, in 1917

Here's the source with lots more interesting photos:

Mikko,
I cannot make out very much detail. Can you provide a larger scale blow up of the rad section on the right aircraft?

John

I am wondering if it is a second radiator.I zoomed in on the photo using Photoshop but of course lost clarity rather quickly. These look like early DIIIs with the centrally mounted radiators.Could it be a second radiator "stacked" on top of the first?Later DV.s in Palestine had two radiators, one on each side as opposed to a single radiator on the starboard side.Just a thought.

Just a guess but it seems to me they added a second radiator on top of the original one for more cooling probably due to the warmer Palestinian conditions. Just my two cents.

It wouldn't be surprising if supplemental or enlarged radiators were necessary in hot climates.

I think you're right! Second radiator in the upper wing on the port side in late production D.IIIs with the original radiator on starboard is a well known practice. Maybe this is what they did with early d.IIIs with a central mounted radiator?!

Familyman,
Perhaps a slight variation of this.

My Gallery
Teves und Braun radiator.

Gentlemen:
They have stacked another Teves und Braun radiator on top of the same radiator mounted in the wing center-section. This is an interesting solution to the desert heating problem. I have never seen this arrangement before. Apparently a better solution was found when the radiator was moved to the right after serial about D.2200/16. With Alb.D.III 600/17 and subsequent Albatros Werke built D.III machines, they used the Daimler Mercedes wider radiator. Those Alb. D.III aircraft shipped to the desert regions, commencing with serial numbers D.600/17, they mounted the second radiator to the left of center using the Daimler-Mercedes wider radiator.
Blue skies,
Dan-San
