Albatros D.V mit 100u120 P.S

Hi Everyone,
I'm totally new to the WW1 flight scene and the more I learn the more questions I have so first up HELLO!
I've been looking at Document group for sale to a German pilot and in his Soldbuch training page it is listed as being trained in a "Albatros D.V mit 100 u 120 P.S Mercedes Motor"
From what I've been able to google the D.V had a 160-180 HP engine so can somebody please explaine what the 100-120 is about if its not horsepower?

thanks

Glenn.

"100 u 120 P.S Mercedes It's not in my Jane's.
Altho there is a 100 hp 6 cyl. but then the hp goes to 160 hp.

It sounds like he's describing the Mercedes D.II, the smaller and older brother of the better-known D.III. There are known cases where, post-1918, the D.II was used to re-engine airplanes for use as trainers, so I suppose the same practice might have obtained in Germany during the Great War. Ransom

Thanks guys,
I was guessing that they may have used smaller engines in the trainers
Any guesses at what the P.S means?

Glenn: PS is the abbreviation of the German Pferdestaerke, meaning horsepower. It has the same literal meaning as the English, "horse" plus "power." Ransom

Albatros D.V mit 100 u 120 P.S Mercedes Motor"

In English I believe this should have been written, “Albatross D.V. with 1000 r.p.m. 120 horsepower Mercedes engine”.
The u in German has something to do with R.P.M. I think.

Umdrehung means to revolve. Undrehung en pro Minute seems to mean R.P.M..
The 100 is probably a misprint with a missing zero and is actually 1000 r.p.m.

Now if someone from Germany can tell me I’m wrong I shan’t be the least bit surprised.

Yours, M.L. Anderson

Hi M,
thanks for that.
While that makes scense I have to add that it is a stamp and not writing.
there is no extra "0" that is faint and there isn't any room for it between the other "0" and the "U".
when I get them in my hands I'll get some scans and put them up for you all to see.
thanks
Glenn.

Hi Charles,
yes I did and I've tryed to post pics but alas no use.I'll try again soon.

the plane is not a D.V but a D.D -does that make a bit more sense?

I can email you some pics if you are interested.

thanks

Glenn.
