axial propeller

Hello,

For years a have a wooden propeller, and a lot of questions.
Looking for help I discovered this forum.

Indication on the propeller :

13041
AXI-
BERLIN
260PS D318 ST---
TP5918
TLUL DRI

Propeller is turning left.

What I am sure is Axial company in Berlin
260 HP and diameter 318cm

The indications over faded, maybe incorrect.

Any idea
Patrick

navigating in the forum is not straightforward

Hello Patrick,

Your Axial prop is from a 260ps Maybach engine, almost certainly one which powered a Friedrichshafen GIII bomber. I have a record of four such props but only one where the serial number could be read, 13184, which is close to yours.

The data that you describe probably reads in full;

13041
Axial
Berlin
260ps
D318
St170
Edul Druck

PS indicates hp (almost the same as British and American hp).
D is Durchmesser, diameter.
St is Steigung, pitch.
Edul indicates anticlockwise rotation when viewed from the front of the aircraft.
Druck (sometimes Druk) indicates a pusher configuration.

The type number is often written under 'Edul Druck.' In your case it ought to be Typ 53 18. Please send me a photo of the prop and the hub data if you can, for my database.

With regards,

Bob

axial propeller

Thanks for reaction.

The propeller was rescued near Maldegem in Belgium.

Can I track the propeller in your new book(cd)?
I 'm coming to Duxford and Fairford.
Regards

Patrick

Hello Patrick,

Many thanks for this excellent photograph. May I use it in the next edition of the book on German props?

My book won't give you any more information on your particular prop but there are twenty-nine pages describing the Axial company and the props that they made. The first half of the book describes the German WW1 prop industry in the context of early German aviation. The second half describes each maker and the props that he made. I am producing this in three parts; part one is available now and covers makers from Ad Astra to Eta. Part two will come out in about three months time and will cover makers from Faerber to Germania.

POSTSCRIPT FOR ALL FORUMITES

Research in this field is difficult. If any forumites have data or photographs about any WW1 German prop, please send it to me.

The thought occurs that as quite a bit of my data has come from this forum, I should offer forumites the book at a reduced price. E-mail me though the numerous e-mail links on my website (below) and mention this thread and I'll send you one for 25.00 gbp instead of 28.00 gbp.

With regards,

Bob

Hello Bob,

Your mention is that the prop is from a Friedrichshaven GIII.
Why not from a Gotha?
(same configuration)

Regards

Patrick
