For additional reading into the "Lille Air Raids" by 80 Wing that Russ mentions above (on 16 & 17 Aug. 1918), is the following chapter from the online history of the AFC during WWI, hosted here in PDF format:

More raids

FlyXwire

And you probably know there were many more raids on German A/D's by British fighters dating right back to May 17 (no not Bishop), in addition to many many day & night raids by bombers. If anyone is interested, I can list more. And the damage noted in my previous, was primarily from German sources.

This includes some mythology that the raid on the Marine JG was in revenge for their aerial success on the previous day; which according to Nowarra was '19 Tommies without loss.' As I have it the Marine JG had 8 claims on 12 Aug 18, of which only 4 are valid. Moreover there is circumstancial evidence of at least one loss.

Cheers Russ

Russ,

Looks like you've assembled the research needed for a future OTF article!

Seriously though, any additional dates or referencing would be appreciated, but not required, as I think the argument has been well supported.

As a big fan of the AFC squadrons in particular, I might contact you in the future for help in reconstructing their mission records at a later date (if I might impose on you then for help).

FlyXwire

I'm 'persona non grata' with OTF these days; they don't like my particular brand of historical pragmatism.

Conact me any time on the AFC missions. 4 AFC were a little optimistic in their claiming however!

Cheers Russ
