RAF SE5a factory drawings available on CD

Greetings!

I just wanted to let the group know that Derek Staha (Leatherhead) is selling CDs of WWI aircraft factory plans to raise funds for the aviation museum in Texas where he volunteers.

I just received mine yesterday. Yowzah! This is an incredible collection of drawings! There are literally hundreds of drawings covering every aspect of construction. The CD also contains an Microsoft Excel list key for the drawings, official reports and various photos and articles.

When viewing the drawings, be aware that there are some SE5 drawings mixed in as well. These are rather interesting in their differences. In particular there is a design for an armored pilot seat!

There are a few gaps in the collection (I do not see plans for the main fuel tank). Overall though, this is a remarkable collection of drawings!

Derek also has CDs of factory drawings for the Sopwith Camel, Sopwith Pup and Sopwith Triplane. Contact Derek for details.

Highly recommended.

Cheers!

Tom

I also have a CD for the Jenny.

Currently archiving the Fokker D.VII and Dr.I. Next will be the SPAD XIII. The Fokkers will probably take a couple of weeks. I just picked up the files last weekend, so I'm not even sure what is in there. The SPAD will take a while. I've seen the massive pile of drawings!! Stay tuned.

Oh, I also have the Bristol Scout.

The drawings are pdf format

Tom,

Thanks for the info. The SE5a is a fine aircraft and anybody who is taking the time to preserve and disseminate the drawings should be lauded.

Derek,

Do you have anything on the Albatros DVa??

Phil

Or ANY Albatros D-series? Or Pfalz DIII/DIIIa? Or Halberstadt DII?

Phil and Brad,

I don't have anything on the Albatros series yet. I will look into the museum's files next weekend and see if there is anything there. I don't recall seeing anything, but I'll give an update in a couple of weeks.

Brad,

I do have the Pflaz III/IIIa archiving complete. Send me an e-mail (dstaha@msn.com) and I'll tell you what I have.

Nothing on the Halberstadt.

A note for modelers

I realize many modelers are here on the 'drome. With that in mind, I understand they do not require all the minute details covered by many of these drawings. For instance, a modeler does not require all 650+ drawings of the SE5/5a. I think the best thing is for anyone interested in data.....send me an e-mail and I'll send you the drawing list. You can pick and choose what drawings you want, and I'll burn only those to a CD. The price will be about 0.50 - 1.00 per drawing, depending on how many you order. I tried to attach the drawing list here, but the file size is too large.

Pioneer Flight Museum

The website is a bit outdated, but this is Roger Freeman's place, where I spend a lot of volunteer time.

Question MIght the Sopwith DOLPHIN and RAF F.E.8 pusher be in there, too ??

Dear MicroSculpt and Fellow WWI AvFans:

The PIPE here once again...and getting ALL those drawings on the S.E.5a, as well on the three best known Sopwith types (Pup, Camel and Tripe) was a nice piece of work...the Public Record Office in London (I THINK it's there) has had ALL of the Royal Aircraft Factory aircraft drawings in their possession for many decades, and was likely used by Cole Palen and Nat deFlavia in building ORA's Sopwith Camel, and our good departed friend Dick King also likely used that resource to build his famous Pup, now at the Owl's Head Museum of Transportation on the Maine coast.

I'm also wondering...where ORA also has a Sopwith DOLPHIN in their collection, and it WAS built from a "good" set of drawings...might THOSE drawings, if they're not "currently" available on the CD, eventually end up on CD as well as the three more famous Sopwith designs I've already mentioned?

Back in the autumn of 1996 I EXTENSIVELY documented the ORA Dolphin with many, many photos of the bare fuselage, extensive MEASUREMENTS of the bare fuse (now in a Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet on my PC) and good quality photos of the bare wings. I also have the issue of "The Aeroplane Monthly" that did a well-focused article on the Dolphin (also with a goodly selection of structural illustrations), and the Windsock Datafile for it is in my library, as well as the Osprey book that covers the Dolphin and Snipe, for documentation to construct a future RC Giant Scale (1/4th size) for geared Laser V-twin four stroke power (with a gear box of 1.33:1, just like the geared Hissos used on wartime Dolphins, that I plan to design for it) and done up as the No.87 Squadron aircraft of pipe-smoking Australian ace Arthur Vigers.

Bwtween the measurements, photos, and FOUR volumes on the Dolphin (I've also got the Aircraft in Profile on the Dolphin, too!) I'm HOPING some factory drawings of the Dolphin might be available on CD to further beef up what I'm gathering together for the aircraft...I'm just asking, IF the Dolphin might be on there, and if not, might it be placed on CD in the future?

I also mentioned the Royal Aircraft factory's F.E.8, or "Effy-Ate"...I vividly remember Cole's "Cannon O'Skully" character flying ORA's repro of it it decades ago, and the Windsock Datafile for THAT odd pusher style fighter is also in my library...where it WAS also a Royal Aircraft Factory design, and also likely had its entire drawing set preserved at the PRO, might that one also be on CD in the future???

"Just asking in advance", that's all....

Yours Sincerely,

The PIPE!
