As far as I know, the French used a kind of box besides the Fuselage. They opened the bottom of this container with a string and all flechettes (several dozens or so) fell down in a small cloud. Usually, they didn´t hit anything and they werde soon regarded as useless. Besides, improved planes became quite early available, capable of dropping small bombs, e.g. 2 x 20 pds.
