Hello David

The serial number 1724 means that this aircraft was registered in the end of 1914 (number 1601 in November 1914)
When the Numbering series reached 10000 in 1916, it was not considered practical to paint five figure numbers onto aircraft. So a new system was introduced with the number prefixed by a letter. To differentiate between aircraft ordered by the RNAS and the RFC , all army orders began with the Prefix "A" and the Navy orders prefix "N".

Cordialement
Bruno

From Bruce Robertson

Serial 1724 sits within a batch of 96 B.E.2c built by British and Colonial Aeroplane Co [total order 1652-1747]

Serial A1724 sits within a batch of 31 Henry Farman built by the Aircraft Manufacturing Co. Hendon [total order A1712 - A1741]. Unfortunately there is not more than Henry Farman here.

The batch A1712-A1741 built by Airco is identified by J.M. Bruce in The aeroplanes of the Royal Flying Corps (Military Wing) as a Henry Farman H.F.20.

Cheers
Kees

Thanks Kees, as always most helpful.

Your call David, but I would suggest .4 to Kees for bringing this to a conclusion and .6 and the next challenge to matte_kudasai for getting there first.

An excellent call under difficult circumstances. I feel bad for Marc and Boris in particular, because they gave reasonable answers early on, but yes Kees did bring this difficult crash file challenge to a close, and Matte was the first to provide the most correct and comprehensive answer he could be expected to give under the circumstances, so I feel your proposal is very fair. I hope there are no objections, I am sure that everyone will be happy for Kees and Matte. Thanks Adrian!

Congratulations Kees and Matte! You guys will probably laugh, but the caption actually says MF shorthorn! I guess it could be some variation of a Shorthorn, but I don't think so. Since all this discussion started I looked at drawings of the Shorthorn and I don't think this is a Shorthorn. Given all the evidence I am sure that it must be a MF 20. Thanks also to everyone else for your contributions.
