Hi Catfish,

you have to think of there were two Aviatik companies.

The picture displayed here shows a fighter prototype from the german "Automobil & Aviatik AG" foundet in Mülhausen/Elsass, that moved to Freiburg/Breisgau before the war and in 1916 to Leipzig.

In 1913 it opened a branch office in Vienna that formed in 1914 together with the "Weiser & Sohn AG" a new company - "Österreichisch-ungarische Flugzeugfabrik Aviatik GmbH", short called "Aviatik-Austria".
From 1916 on, when Julius Berg joined the frim, he started to design own aircraft that were often named "Aviatik-Berg X.YZ"

The site you linked offeres little mixed-up details mainly of the german developements but showing pictures of austrain machines.

(There were other firms like the "Gustav Otto Flugzeugwerke" in Munich that fromed a subsidary "AGO" in Berlin. Both continued to design own aircraft and I often don´t know how to name them, if identified first...)

For the engine I found the 195 hp Benz Bz.IIIb (Bz.IIIbo) was a V-8 engine.

It also powered the AEG DJ.I & PE or Albatros D.X & Dr.II.
(I doubt the use of it with the Aviatik-Berg D.III as often qouted.)

Cheers

Aquilius

Hi Aquilius,

Thanks for the 195 hp Benz Bz.IIIb (Bz.IIIbo) site.

Here's the AEG DJ.I:

Albatros Dr.II:

Again the Aviatik D.III:

All three with the "V-8".

I also have never seen an Aviatik-Berg D Type powered by a V-8.

Thanks for sharing, FOKKERJ

Hello Aquilius,

thanks a lot, seems i mixed up things here - two Aviatik companies alright

In an older book from 1920 the only german 8 cylinder engine for planes i found was the "Daimler engine" (no further designation in the book) with 230/240 PS, 8 cylinders, 160 mm bore, 170 mm stroke, 670 kg, 2,85 kg/PS, fuel consumption 55-57 kg, oil consumption 6 kg, 1100/1200 rpm.
But it seems this is another engine (?)

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

Hi Catfish!

Your description fits early 8-inline Daimler-Mercedes engine, sometimes refered as J8L.
There was another 8-inline designated Mercedes D.IV, design related to the ubiquitous Mercedes D.III.
Engine in question is Benz Bz.IIIb family, a V8 engine inspired by Hispano-Suiza (not a copy).
195 hp model was reported to have 125 mm bore and 140 mm stroke, 225 hp at 1700 rpm.
Benz Bz.IIIbv was a bit larger engine, 135 mm bore and stroke, 200 hp at 1800 rpm, 275 hp at 2000 rpm, geared 19:29.
At the second Adlershof fighter competition in May/June 1918 several prototypes used such engines:
  • Albatros D.X 2206/18 W.Nr.4914 ............ Benz Bz.IIIbm
  • Aviatik D.III 3350/18 W.Nr.10012 ........... Benz Bz.IIIbo
  • Aviatik D.III W.Nr.10005 ....................... Benz Bz.IIIbo
  • Aviatik D.IV W.Nr.10008 ....................... Benz Bz.IIIbv
  • Fokker V.27 W.Nr.2734 ......................... Benz Bz.IIIbo (or Bz.IIIboü)
  • LFG Roland D.VII 224/18 W.Nr.3780 ........ Benz Bz.IIIbo
  • LVG D.IV ............................................ Benz Bz.IIIbo
  • Pfalz D.XIIa ........................................ Benz Bz.IIIboü
Fokker V.30 W.Nr.2737 with Bz.IIIbm geared engine was sent to Adlershof after the competition.
Armoured Fokker V.37 was also equipped with a Bz.IIIb engine.
Bz.IIIb had vibration problems so BMW.IIIa was the preferred fighter engine.

Regards,
Yavor

Albatros Dr.II:

I'll try to find a more recent foto as this one still shows the old stereo speaker system that has since been replaced
with a more compact surround sound system.

HAPPY TRAILS, FOKKERJ

Unusual radiator set-up!
