Boys and Girls welcome to Breguet's Aircraft ID Challenge #559!

Previous Challenges: Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* --

Quote:
Bréguet's Rules

1. The thread title must be "Bréguet's aircraft ID challenge #......"
2. The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
3. The completed aircraft must have been either; designed, built or have left the ground during the '14-'18 period and be identifiable by the poster.
4. The photo must show the whole aircraft - from whatever angle, or at least 2 views of a 3 view drawing (photo by preference).
5. Challenges which depict a machine already earlier presented are disqualified
6. (always check the list at earlyaviator.com/br.challenge when in doubt !)
7. If there is any doubt as to the eligibility of an aircraft for the challenge details should be PM'd to Breguet BEFORE the aircraft is submitted.
8. Once someone has got 5 correct answers under their belt they become an ACE. Once they become an ACE they must wait 12hrs after the posting of the new challenge before they can post an answer.
9. To be eligible for correct ID an answer must include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in its identification.
10. The first person to ID the challenge correctly gets to post the next challenge. If this can not be done for any reason Breguet himself will post the next challenge.
11. If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next one. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
12. The final arbiter in relation to questions about the rules will be Breguet.
Have a good hunt

Bonjour

Aquilius I think that the correct number of the challenge is 589 and not 559

Hello,

Maybe we should leave out current sequence. Let it be Challenge No 559 and No 588 will be omitted in the future.

Cheers

Marek

Looks like the Caproni Ca.53

As far as being special, I am not sure, perhaps one of the following:
The way the flying wires are attached to the fuselage?
The fact that all of them made are still in existance?
That it had a 500 hp engine once?

Brian

(OK, only one was made, but it was under restoration in the 1990's.)

One further point of identification,
The rudder is Caproni style rudder,
with no fin. A distinctive trait.

Brian, you are right!

This is the Caproni Ca 53!

There was no single fact I wanted to read about it's special design, but I wanted to encourage you to tell some of it's story.

The Ca 53 was designed in response to an Army requirement for an Aircraft that could carry 400 kg load with a speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).
It was intended for the 700 hp Fiat A.14 engine but due to problems with this it was experimentally fitted with a 450 hp Franco Tosi FT V-12 (two joined Isotta-Fraschinis), the 500 hp Bugatti H-16 or the 400 hp Liberty engine.
The company claimed a top speed of 175 km/h in 1918 with the Franco Tosi, but the developement was soon abandoned.

The design in all is fairly unique and you are right, the rudder is a big hint to Caproni.

And I think the most special fact is, it remained at the Caproni factory and is now exposed at the Museo dell’Aeronautica Gianni Caproni in Trento.

Perhaps the difficult part is that I will have to review the list of the previous 588 first

Can we clinch the matter about the numbering? Otherwise Rod Filan who works on the masterlist will be overheating

I propose we go further on the normal track 558 being the one from AROTH (disqualified at that), then 559 by Aquilius. So the next one of Rufe is 560. The good news is you have only to look at 559 types which have been presented

Cheers

Kees
