Hello Everyone:
I'v finally gotten ahold of a digital camera and have taken some photos of the 1/32 Roden Dr.I cockpit area before I get everything painted and put together... which will hide most of the detail. The constant delima of interior detailing on models.
These two images are a little fuzzy... sorry about that.
I used both Eduard and Polish PART photoetch sets for this kit. I also scratchbuilt a number of items including the oil pulsator, and an entirely redone control column. The wood effects are done with an old Detail Master wood grain set. The problem with these decals are that they were originally made for 1/24th car models and don't quite fit the scale properly, but they do give a decent enough effect. All of this was done before I discovered the SPADA wood effect decals. According to A.E. Ferko the seat was supposed to be covered in red colored fabric. I didn't discover this until the seat was on its mountings and the safety harnesses were in place. Please don't tell anyone.
Here are a couple of more photos with most of the stuff around the cockpit test fitted into place.
You can actually get a better view of some of the interior in the uppermost photo.
The placements and colors of the interior parts are based heavily on The Memorial Flight's Fokker Dr.I reproduction.
Here is the upper wing cutout. I had originally placed the cutout in the position that was indicated by the kit itself. Much to my disgust I found out this was incorrect and had to move the opening up further on the wing top. Fortunately, I had not placed the wing spar in position when I discovered the mistake. A little plastic, putty, and sandpaper and it all worked out.
A final image of all the major subassemblies test fitted together. You can see putty on areas that needed major correction. The Roden kit is nice but has a good number of goof ups, most minor, but some require major work... as can be seen on the stabalizer in this photo.
Well, next step is painting. Can't wait to get this out of the way. The 1/32 kit is taking sooooo long. The 1/48 kits will be a snap compared to this one.
Please let me know what you think of the work so far... good or bad!
