Aquilius

your picture shows a "non standard" nacelle with additional fairing around the engine and rear cockpit, maybe that was removable.

With these Otto pushers there was no standard, almost every machine was slightly different. The museum in Schleißheim is building a replica and they told us during a visit that they chose a configuration that was well documented by photographs.

There were at least three different rudder assemblies, one with three rudders and a "biplane tail", an angular single rudder and the rounded Farman style.
The museum will do the three rudder variant.

Certainly some facinating types coming to light! (And Aquilius we've ruled out all Farmans). Here's another bit to be going on with.

Since we are all guessing, how about one of the Schwade doppledeckers of 1912-1914? The rudder on the pictures I am familiar with is similar and there are a two or three possibilities - a Farman copy and a military and a school type.

Looks like an air-to-air shot.......do we get any points for guessing the type of photo-plane used?

Yes but I'd be surprised if you did!

An air-to-air shot but taken with an air-to-ground camera (GUESS) where the grid lines are built into the function of the camera to help with range finding.

If so, this is fairly sophisticated. So, not Russia, perhaps Western Front or (more likely?) a training or development station. Later in the war.

All speculation.

Interesting theory Dave but the grid lines are there to help me divide up the photo - they're not on the original, which I'll post after someone attempts to put all the pieces together.

Hello,

It is interesting. This aircraft looks a bit like Breguet BU 3 fuselage nacelle and four-wheel undercarriage fitted with Farman style booms and tail section.

Greetings

Marek
