The Rules
All aircraft are of the 14-18 period (Must have left the ground during this period).
The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
All "ACES" with a score of 5.0 or higher must obey the 3.0 hour handicap. All others with a score of ZERO to 4.99 may start immediately, if not sooner! Offenders will be dealt with severely!
To be eligible for correct ID an answer must include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in its identification.
And whom ever wins this challenge will have to provide a new one! If this can not be done for any reason, please PM Breguet and he will take over as host!
If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next challenge. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
The final arbitrator of all things to do with the "rules" is Breguet
For your entertainment and educational endeavors, I submit the following:

OK.
I will be bold and start. More than likely I am wrong, but that has never stopped me in the past.
Gotha G.V.
Characteristic upper wing fuel tank.
Propellor cutout in upper wing.
Handpainted night camo on fuselage.
External control cable guides on fuselage.
Tailplane/elevator shape.
Now, I am going to sleep.

Plus, since I don't see any real evidence of the engines still in place, they probably broke free during the crash since they were only mounted to the lower wing by little teeny tiny struts.
Now, I am really going to sleep.

Bonjour à tous
Hello Jay
On 25 January 1918 at 22 hours, hit by many shells of the DCA(1), this Gotha had just bombed Dunkirq and was flying above Zuydcoote with great difficulty , then it falls on the beach.
On board a pilot a officer bomber and an observer. The first two are conducted as soon captured at the Semaphore. The observer officer, injured, was transported to Sanatorium of Zuydcoote.
The wreckage was exposed at Dunkirk Place Jean Bart
Cordialement
Bruno
N°2 Wingman
(1) the gotha was claimed by adj Merle from escadrille Spa 313

Where did they take all these planes after the display? Were they broken up and recycled?
Why wasn't this forum in existence then to buy them up?

Hello Marc
I dont know what they do with these wreckages ?
I think that they were recycled as you say-Anyway the fact that they were exposed gave the good opportunity to have a lot of photos and postcards of ww1 german aircraft ,(and incidentally useful for crash file challenge.. )
here is the site of Jean Marie Picquart with(among a lot of interesting photos)
you can see captured german aircraft exposed at Nancy
Avions exposs Nancy
Have a good WE

Hi Bruno
Thanks! I found the Nancy site you mentioned a few days after i posted "Two more postcards" (section: "Memorabilia") which includes a postcard (Gotha shot down by Guyenemer) that i bought at a zurich fleamarket. check it out! By the way, the postcard cost me 25 Francs (Suisse), ca. 17 Euros.
salutations
marc

This Is The End!
Congratulations to AROTH for not "snoozin' and losin' " and thanks to Bruno for the more complete information and great image.
One full point to AROTH and 0.5 to Bruno for the additional intel.
A special mention to Joachim and Marc for participating.
My source says that the back of this post card has this as "German Taube brought down in Dunkerk, France. Jan 1918.", but he goes on and says:
"I am no expert on German military aircraft but I am pretty sure that this isn't a Taube, or Dove, but I think it could well be what's left of a Gotha G.V heavy bomber. For me, the giveaway is the big square tail together with the hexagonal camouflage pattern, but I could be wrong."
I have looked for the one small publiction on Gothas that I have with out any luck. I seem to remember that the differences between the G.III, G.IV, & G.V are very slight. I will accept G.V as this seems to be the consensus here.
I am interested in any information on the Bogl or Bombengeschwader of this particular machine and would be grateful for such. I think that the "Four White Dots" are great and would make a nice subject for a painting or model.
I have included my uncropped image (showing more tail) and Bruno's nicer image.
