Albert Balls' Nieuport 16 A134

Greetings all! Does anyone know what type of mounting was used for the Lewis Gun on this aircraft? A picture would be helpful.
Cheers.

While I'm about it, did this aircraft carry roundels on the upper wing?

There is a photo of A134 on page 46 of the C&CI publication Nieuports in RNAS, RFC and RAF Service. No details of the Lewis gun mounting are visible in the picture, but the roundels (or cockades) are clearly shown on the underside of the upper plane.

Hope this helps.

Hi AHC-ED,

I agree with TomVrille that British roundels are definitely seen on the underside of the top wing, as you know. My guess would be that they were painted on the top surface of the top wing as well, even though the aircraft might have arrived without any original French cockades on the upper surface of the top wing. Photos of other French-camouflaged Nieuport 16's and 17's in No. 60 Squadron seem to show roundels painted on the top wing upper surface, as far as I know.

Best regards,

Greg
