The identification of Farmans (Henry and Maurice) is a complex matter, as there are the registrations given by the factory (HF / MF) and the registrations given by the French Service des Fabrications de l'Aviation SFA). The complexity boils down that one Farman factory type was sometimes fitted with different engines en/or crew sitting (pilot front or back etc.). So one factory registration corresponds to more SFA registrations.

Luckily an original list of the SFA has survived in the archives, which can be found here.

Coming back on your question, the Farman Type XXX was a Maurice Farman MF 11 bis with a 130 hp Renault 8C engine. Pilot sitting in the front, specially equipped for photographic reconnaissance.

It looked like this, the big camera clearly to be seen. Looking at the seating I would think that the pilot is in the back and the observer (wielding the camera and the machine gun) is in the front. According to the list of the SFA it is then a Type XXXI.

Dimensions are given for the MF 11 bis (Type XXX) as:

Span 18, 15 meter ; Length 9,23 meter ; Height 3,00 meter ; Wing area 56 m2
Empty weight 780 kg ; Loaded weight 1155 kg.

(2) Liron, Jean. Les avions Farman. Docavia part 21

Have a fine day

Hello, Kees!
Thank you for answer! But I think that your opinion is not right. HF-30 and MF-11 is tow different airplanes. HF-30 was designed for Russian IAF and in Russia was builted more, than in France (>400 and 50)!

The Henri (Henry) Farman HF.30 two-seat reconnaissance machine was built in considerable numbers by the Dux Factory. Engine was a 160 hp Canton-Unné.

Span: 15,81 meter Height: 3,21 meter Wing area: 49 square meter
Empty weight: 830 kg Loaded weight: 1180 kg
Max. speed: 136 km/hr Ceiling: 4500 meter Range: 450 km
Endurance: 4 hours Range: 450 km
Climb to 1000 meter in 5 minutes
Armament one machine gun

Dux built some 400 HF.30 machines.

You will not believe it I checked in the French work of Jean Liron - Les Avions Farman - and the length is given as ........ 10,66 meter.

The data I gave you are from Davilla - French aircraft of the first world war - who specifically relates the data to the Dux built type. He gave no length.

The data between these two are 'quite' consistent. Liron gives 15,81 span, 3,20 height, wing area 49 square meter, empty weight 700 kg, loaded weight 1050 kg, maximum speed 155 km/hr.

Length (10,66) is remarkable taken in consideration with the span (15,81), but could be right when considering the very long nacelle protuding before the wings.

Have a fine day
