New Topic: MAYBACH

I'm trying to fill in holes in my WWI aeroengine database an this seems to be one of the biggest holes.

I'm aware of the following Maybach airship/aeroengines:

Type AZ
Type CX
Type DW
Type Mb.III
Type Mb.IV
Type MB.IVa
Type Mb.VI
Type Mb.VII

I have information/data from Adlershof tables, the normal aeroengine references, RAE tests, NACA Tests ...etc, for the AZ ,CX , Mb.IV, Mb.IVa engines.

I have ABSOLUTLEY nothing and can find nothing for the Type DW, Mb.III, Mb.VI, Mb. VII.

Do any of you know of a source of data on these Maybach aeroengines.

Thanks in advance, if you do!

KC

Hi, KACEY!

Not too much about Maybach engines.

Quote:
Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau-Gesellschaft (Maybach) in Bissingen, Würtemberg (from late 1909)
  • Maybach 1909: 6-cylinder water-cooled 140 P.S. at 1050 rev/min; 160 mm bore by 170 mm stroke (20 cu.dm); weight 450 kg; fuel consumption 240 g/P.S./h; oil consumption 24 g/P.S./h (LZ 9, 10, 11, 12).
  • Maybach 1912: 6-cylinder water-cooled 165 P.S. at 1200 rev/min; 160 mm bore by 170 mm stroke (20 cu.dm); weight 450 kg; fuel consumption 240 g/P.S./h; oil consumption 24 g/P.S./h (LZ 13-19, 21).
  • Maybach 1913: 6-cylinder water-cooled 180 P.S. at 1250 rev/min; 160 mm bore by 170 mm stroke (20 cu.dm); weight 462 kg; fuel consumption 225 g/P.S./h; oil consumption 13 g/P.S./h (LZ 22, 23, M IV, SL 2).
  • Maybach 1914: 6-cylinder water-cooled 210 P.S. at 1200 rev/min; 160 mm bore by 190 mm stroke (22.8 cu.dm); weight 414 kg; fuel consumption 220 g/P.S./h; oil consumption 13 g/P.S./h (L 3, L 16, Z IX, Z X).
Maybach IR and Mb.III were mentioned as 160 P.S. engines used in small number of seaplanes only (FF 31; FF 33B/E; Oertz W 7; Hansa-Brandenburg KDW). Fuel consumption 200 g/P.S./h (!), oil consumption 10 g/P.S./h for type IR.

Maybach type HS from 1915 was 6-cylinder inline water-cooled engine, 240 P.S. at 1406 rev/min, compression ratio given as 1:6.88 (!), weight 365 kg, fuel consumption 200 g/P.S./h (Zeppelin VGO I, VGO II, Dornier RS II).

240 P.S. Mb.IV was used in Oertz W 5 flying boats (1915), FF 40 (1916); Gotha WD 8 (1916); Oertz W 8 (1916).

Maybach–Motorenbau GmbH, Friedrichshafen (also Motorenbau Friedrichshafen) produced 1123 aero-engines between mid-1917 and February 1919, all rated in “Klasse IV” (from 200 to 300 P.S.), most 245 P.S. Mb.IVa.

Mb VII 12-cylinder 500 P.S. up to 2 500 m (also 520 P.S. up to 1 800 m), described as “twin” Mb.IVa.

More about Luftschiffmotors.
There is a very good article in
Zeitschrift für Flugtechnik und Motorluftschiffahrt Jahrgang II Heft 21 (11. November 1911) S. 268-275 (+Taffel XII)
Graf von Zeppelin, jr., Diplom-Ingenieur
